Integrated Care: A Report From The Field And What It Means For Psychologists In Future Healthcare Delivery

Ronald B. Margolis, Ph.D. will provide an overview of integrated care and how it is differentiated from other delivery models. He will report on a major statewide initiative in which he led the training and consultation team for integrating behavioral health into primary care setting over the past nine years. Finally, he will suggest some of the implications for the future role of psychologists in healthcare.

Dr. Margolis is a Professor Emeritus of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at St. Louis University School of Medicine and founder and CEO of the Saint Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute. The Institute is a multidisciplinary group of 48 providers including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, professional counselor, spiritual director, and postdoctoral residents. SLBMI provides primary mental healthcare in an outpatient setting, including specialized intensive programs and integrated Care Consultation. Dr. Margolis’s professional interests are in the area of administration and management of integrated health and behavioral healthcare. He directs a consultation and training team that works with CEOs, healthcare directors, primary care providers, and behavioral health clinicians at 35 primary care organizations across Missouri implementing an integrated care model. He has also published on the area of Integrated Care and has given many presentations to professional groups.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the program, participants will:
1. Have an enhanced understanding of the Primary Care Behavioral Health model.
2. Learn how changes in healthcare systems will impact the role of integrated care.
3. Be able to discuss the role of a “Behavioral Health Consultant” in healthcare delivery.
4. Discover potential future opportunities for psychologists in healthcare delivery.
